Mayor John Hieftje called the regular session of the Ann Arbor City Council to order at 7:10 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chamber.

Council stood for a moment of silence.

Mayor Hieftje led Council in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.


PRESENT : Councilmembers Robert M. Johnson, Joan Lowenstein, Michael R. Reid, Jean Carlberg, Leigh Greden, Margie Teall, Marcia Higgins, Christopher Easthope, Wendy A. Woods (7:19 p.m.), Mayor John Hieftje, 10.

ANNOUNCEMENT

HURRICANE KATRINA

Mayor Hieftje announced that the Governor has pledged to federal authorities and FEMA that the City of Ann Arbor would assist in the efforts of the State of Michigan taking in up to 10,000 citizens of the United States who have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina. A meeting was held today to discuss the situation and it was determined that there are approximately 130 housing units for immediate occupancy in the Ann Arbor area. The McKinley Corporation was very helpful and brought forward 100 units of housing. Another meeting will take place on September 7, 2005 with different organizations in Ann Arbor to discuss how the City can be more helpful not just with shelter but with schooling, clothing, food, etc.


INTRODUCTIONS

Presentation of the Code RED Emergency Notification System

Matt Naud, Environmental Coordinator, gave Council an introduction of the CodeRED Emergency Notification System. He said that the system is capable of dialing 60,000+ phone numbers to notify people of emergency situations. The system would be used for emergency purposes only. An example would be a major water main break in the City where citizens would be advised to boil their water. The system would also be used to inform Police and Fire personnel (all at one time) of any emergency situations that they may need to respond to.
